The History of the Llanberis Station and the Snowdon Mountain Railway

Experiences around Snowdon Railway

# 1. The Establishment of the Railway
The Snowdon Mountain Railway was opened in 1896, inspired by the famous cog railways of Switzerland. The goal was to provide a safe and comfortable way to reach the summit of Snowdon, which was previously only accessible via challenging hiking trails.

The Llanberis Station served as the main station and administrative center for the entire railway line from the beginning. Here, locomotives were prepared, passengers welcomed, and important maintenance work carried out.

# 2. The Technical Features of the Railway
- The Snowdon Mountain Railway is the only cog railway in Great Britain specifically designed for the steep ascent to the summit of Snowdon.
- The railway uses a rack-and-pinion system to provide additional stability on the steep sections of track.
- Originally, the trains were powered by steam locomotives, while today both diesel and steam trains operate.

The opening of the railway was a significant event that revolutionized tourism in the Llanberis region and Snowdonia.

# 3. Challenges and Development in the 20th Century
During World War II, railway operations were temporarily suspended, but in the post-war years, the Snowdon Mountain Railway experienced a boom. With increasing interest in hiking and nature experiences in the Snowdonia Mountains, the railway became one of the most popular tourist attractions in Wales.

In recent decades, extensive renovation work has been carried out on the railway to preserve its historical character while meeting modern safety standards.

Rating reflects the tea room only. Such a shame, with 30 mins to go until they close, that they start issuing all drinks (even if you are sitting in) in disposable cups, when obviously they were using proper mugs before hand. So much for having any green credentials, as two of the staff were just standing there doing nothing, including the washing up I suppose..........

We had about 45 min slow steam engine journey only a small narrow gauge engine but it was memorable, around part of the beautiful lake, lots of slate mining history to see. Gift shop, toilets, refreshments available, lots of parking spaces plus bars..easy to get round if you're wheelchair dependent but not sure about wheelchairs on the train..
